I had a 30-minute chat with the general manager. It was a standard sales rep interview, with typical questions about my background and past jobs. They also asked about my availability and how many hours I'd prefer to work. Pretty straightforward.

I had an online interview, and they called me back almost right away, just two days later, to come in the very next day. Since the Costco I applied for wasn't built yet, the interview was at the local mall. I heard some people had trouble finding it, but it was easy for me. When I got there, there were two other people, and by the time I was called in, the waiting area was packed with all sorts of people. The person next to me mentioned it was her third interview, which made me even more nervous than I already was. Little did I know, you had to do four interviews before getting an offer – they told me this at the very end. Two guys asked me a bunch of situational questions. You could tell they were looking for specific traits, and if you didn't have them, they'd cut you fast.

It started with a quick phone chat, then two in-person meetings. The first was with a local recruiter, and the second was with someone from the head office. Things went well, but they mentioned that even though I had more knowledge than most, they usually promote from within. Everyone starts at minimum wage, so they'd rather pay someone already there more, even if they have less experience, than hire someone new.

  • Are you capable of working independently?
  • Describe an instance where you exceeded your usual duties in your previous position.
