First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Cook Children's Health Care System.
Patient Access Specialist
The interview went well and lasted about an hour. They asked common questions like why I'm interested, why they should hire me, and what good customer service means to me. I got a call back with an offer about a week after the interview.
- Why are you interested?
- Why should we hire you?
- Tell me about a time you had a conflict with a coworker.
Medical Assistant
The interview process was pretty good. I liked my interviewer and the other people I met. Just make sure you're ready for your interview. They told me I'd hear back in two weeks, but I never did. I just got an email saying my application was rejected. I drove two hours and took time off work for this interview because it's been my dream to work for this company. I feel like I deserved a follow-up from my interviewer, but I was left in the dark.
- Could you tell me about yourself?
Registered Nurse
Interview process was a bit all over the place. The recruiter didn't get back to me after my initial email, so I had to follow up several times to get a response. I was really hoping to join this company. After I followed up, they scheduled an interview, but it didn't go well about halfway through. I had applied for a position that I felt was a good fit for my skills, but they said I wasn't suitable. I don't agree with that, and I believe empathy isn't something you can just teach like other skills. I'm confident I have plenty of both. So, I felt patronized and was told my resume would be passed along to directors, making me think I'd at least get another interview, but that didn't happen. Honesty is super important to me in interviews, but it feels like hospitals now prefer candidates who act like they're perfect, which isn't real. We live in a world where we have to 'sell ourselves' more than be honest. The way I was treated, in a condescending manner, has just made me want to find a better place to work.
- Can you share an instance where you had a disagreement with a coworker and how you handled it?
Senior Data Engineer
I had a great initial chat with the hiring manager and was keen to hear about their plans for updating the data infrastructure at Cook Children's. The conversation with the hiring manager made me really excited about the prospect of working with him and his team. However, after an in-person interview with his team, I realized that even if I got an offer, I wouldn't take it. His team seemed fixated on the fact that I hadn't used a tool called SSIS in a while and spent about an hour grilling me about my limited experience with SSIS. Interestingly, part of the job would involve modernizing their infrastructure, and this tool wouldn't even be used after about a year. Nobody bothers to learn this tool anymore because it's so outdated. Also, I was disappointed by the team's lack of more modern tools. I had to explain what Apache Airflow was and the purpose of using an orchestration tool because nobody on his team had heard of it. To top it off, one woman kept taking notes, looking away, and then shaking her head. I found it unprofessional and couldn't imagine working well with his team.
- Describe how you would add new records to a table and also update existing data if the record has been modified?
