Contentsquare Product Designer Interview Questions
& Process

A recruiter contacted me about a Staff Product Designer position at Contentsquare, with a salary range of $200-250k. I was enthusiastic because I've been a Senior for a few years and feel ready for this career advancement, plus I have significant experience in this field. I went through several interview rounds, including a recruiter chat, a hiring manager meeting, a portfolio review with a panel, and multiple one-on-one sessions. I received positive feedback throughout. Right after my final interview, a recruiter (covering for my main contact who was out of office) called to say the team was keen to offer me a role and asked about my salary expectations. The next day, they requested another one-on-one with their Head of Design. During this meeting, they informed me the offer was actually for a Senior Product Designer role, at the lower end of the salary range, meaning I'd be making less than my current salary. I was surprised and let down, as I had clearly stated my desired title and salary in my initial conversations with the recruiter. Had I known it was a Senior role at that salary, I wouldn't have proceeded with the interviews, saving everyone's time. I ultimately declined the offer. Although the recruiters and team members were pleasant, they should have had clear role alignment before reaching out to candidates. It seems there might be some internal issues due to recent acquisitions, which might mean I've avoided a difficult situation.

I went through over 8 calls in total, including recruiter check-ins with feedback and a design challenge. The challenge involved picking a poorly designed screen or interactive element from a popular app/service, explaining its flaws, suggesting fixes, and justifying my ideas. This whole thing took about 2 months, and unfortunately, I didn't get an offer in the end.

This was a really great interview experience for me. Lots of people interviewed me, but I want to give a shout-out to Antoine Sauget, the tech recruiter, who was super responsive and answered all my questions throughout the process. I always got feedback quickly after each stage from him. I also want to mention Philippe Diakite, who was the calmest interviewer I've ever met. It was a pleasure speaking with him.
