First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Contentful.
Senior Software Engineer
It was a very chaotic interview process. They normally schedule 5 interviews, but I ended up having 7. I had completed 6 interviews and they were positive about the process and should have given me a decision. However, someone from the team wanted to do an extra interview, so I had 7 interviews in total. After the last interview, I got the rejection email. The whole thing took 6 hours of my time and I also had to visit the office, so with commuting, the entire process took 8 hours. I found it very unrespectful.
- Can you tell me about the most impressive project you've developed?
- Describe the most challenging task, project, or problem you've faced in your career.
- You will have a 90-minute coding interview.
Software Engineer
So I had three interviews with Contentful. It started with a phone screen, then a video call with a senior engineer, and finally a technical interview with a panel. The panel interview felt alright, though I tend to get really nervous during tech interviews and didn't perform as well as I'd hoped, which I'm sure is why I didn't move forward. Everyone was super nice and they got back to me within a few days until the last interview. It's been over a month now and I haven't heard anything back, not even a rejection, despite reaching out several times. My experience before that was great, but it's tough to go through multiple interview rounds and then just get ghosted.
- For a take-home assignment that’s pretty easy, what would you add to it during the actual interview?
Software Engineer
The interview experience was remote and well organized, with a schedule that could be adjusted and quick responses. I communicated with one recruitment coordinator throughout, who made the entire process very clear and easy to follow. Initially, there was a remote technical challenge using Node.js and React, followed by a collaborative technical exercise conducted with a partner. This paired session was highly interactive, and the interviewers were excellent to collaborate with. During the interview process, I had the chance to interact with various individuals holding different positions, including a director of software engineering, engineering managers, and team members from the group I would potentially join.
- Regarding the pairing exercise, could you discuss alternative methods for deploying the Node.js application?
- Could you tell me about a project you particularly enjoyed working on and the reasons behind your preference?
