Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at ConocoPhillips.
Analyst
It was a long, difficult, and in-depth interview process. I spent about 6 hours at their office on the same day, interviewing with three managers. All the questions were about the company's S.P.I.R.I.T values. I had to explain how I handled different situations, performed in previous jobs, or completed tasks using Safety, People, Integrity, Responsibility, Innovation, and Teamwork. This was the hardest interview I had compared to others in the oil and gas industry over a six-month period.
- Can you share an example of how you successfully completed a challenging task in a past role, specifically highlighting your use of the SPIRIT values: Safety, People, Integrity, Responsibility, Innovation, and Teamwork?
Analyst
I was contacted through a staffing agency who thought I was a good fit. They had me take an Excel test, which I passed with a 90% even though I haven't used it much in the last 9 years. My BS in Accounting (3.7 GPA) and the Excel score got me an interview, though it was scheduled last minute for the next morning. The interviewers were late, and seemed surprised by my race. The interview was short and casual, focusing on behavioral questions, but they seemed disengaged. Later, the agency told me I wasn't hired because of my Excel score, which they had before the interview. I suspect it was a coded reason, and the initial reaction to my appearance confirmed it.
- Can you describe how you've used pivot tables in past roles?
- How often do you use Excel in your day-to-day work?
Analyst
I had several interviews with senior folks, and they were all good. They asked tough questions but listened well and gave detailed, helpful answers to my questions.
- What made you decide to apply for this job?
