The first 30 min screening was good. Then I had a 30 min chat with the hiring manager, which ran long because I had lots of questions, but it was helpful. They said the next step was a presentation and then panel interviews. But they actually scheduled another hour-long interview with team members first. After that, I finally got to the presentation and panel. The presentation instructions were clear, but the panel was rough. They focused heavily on basic engineering math, barely touching on my presentation. I wasn't ready for that, as they hadn't hinted the panel would be so technically deep. They mentioned wanting someone experienced who thinks creatively, but their questions felt like they wanted someone who aced textbook engineering rather than a well-rounded industry professional.

The interviews were pretty straightforward, mostly because I was only able to get through recruiters for basic positions. It seemed like they struggled to match experienced people with suitable roles. I was directed to entry-level jobs a few times, and then conversations with hiring managers showed I was actually a better fit for more complex work. I couldn't find a team hiring for both types of roles, and each team conducts its own interviews. After going back and forth several times, I just stopped looking and found employment elsewhere.

The first interview was scheduled for 30 minutes with a recruiter. Unfortunately, they missed the initial Zoom meeting, rescheduled, and then canceled the second one last minute. The third attempt felt pretty smug, and I really didn't enjoy that interaction. The second interview was with the hiring manager, which ran over by 15 minutes from the scheduled 30. There was also a surprise second person on the call who clearly hadn't been briefed on my background beyond my resume, like they just got the info right before the meeting. I didn't advance to their panel interview stage, which, given the previous interactions, I suspect might have involved some demeaning tasks.

So, usually it's about 3 rounds, but since they were considering me for a different role too, it ended up being 4 rounds. First up was a recruiter phone screen. Then I had an interview with the manager where we talked a lot about my experience related to the job. The third round, which is normally the last one, was a half-day virtual thing. It started with me giving a 45-minute presentation on technical projects and my experience relevant to the position. After that, there were panel interviews with a bunch of different people, ranging from coworkers to VPs and other managers.

Confirmed questions2 questions
  • Can you explain how you would approach and solve problems that might come up in this role?
  • We'll also do a general vibe check throughout the interviews.
