Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Codesmith.
Coordinator
The interview process had several steps, including a take-home assignment, a brief presentation, and a meeting with the CEO. It took a lot of time, but I appreciate their dedication to finding the right team members. I also had the chance to meet a lot of my future colleagues.
- Can you prepare and deliver a 15-minute presentation on any subject you choose?
Coordinator
It’s just too much. Phone Screening Take-Home (took me a couple hours) Attend a live virtual session 3- half hour interviews back to back 1- Presentation for 10+people 1-CEO call This is not necessary for an entry level role. Consider merging the 30 minute interviews into one since the same questions are asked and include the 10 minute presentation. Should be a take home or a presentation, not both. Find ways to make this a pleasant experience for the candidate so you can get an easy yes when an offer is given. Way too many red flags. Nice people and strong mission though!
- Can you share an instance where you went above and beyond?
- What unique contributions do you offer to a team?
- The take-home assignment consists of three scenarios, two of which require you to develop materials.
Program Coordinator
The interview process was lengthy, taking about 5 weeks from application to decision. It began with a phone call and a take-home assignment featuring 3 behavior-based questions. The initial conversation highlighted the importance of company culture, which seemed to align with my values, making the homework feel worthwhile. Next, I participated in a Codesmith workshop and an "onsite" interview. This included separate 30-minute conversations with three staff members and a 15-minute presentation to the programs team. However, one interviewer's tone and questions were off-putting from the beginning. By the presentation stage, it felt like she was rushing through it. Despite investing significant time, the tasks didn't seem to be fully considered in the final decision. Feedback suggested the outcome rested heavily on that one interviewer's opinion, as she was the only one whose questions related to the feedback provided. While not getting an offer is always disappointing, I felt disrespected by this experience.
- Tell me about the most complex system you've organized, including any supporting documents like spreadsheets or screenshots, and explain your thought process in setting it up.
- How do you interpret the saying, "There's no task too small"?
- And what's your take on "There's no task too big"?
