So I applied with my resume and portfolio, I have experience with React, Next.js, Node.js and some personal projects on GitHub. Then I got a technical assessment, it was a take-home coding project. I tried to do it like a real job task, writing clean code and documenting my choices.

The interview process was really well organized. Everyone on the panel was humble and friendly, and I had a great time with each interviewer. The HR part was smooth, and they got back to me with the results pretty quickly.

Behavioral Technical

I had a phone screen and then an in-person interview with several developers, each session lasting an hour. Since it was a contract-to-hire position, there were additional screenings managed by the recruiting company. I had serious doubts about the contract-to-hire setup because the contracting firm's benefits were really subpar. I questioned them extensively about this, but they were evasive, frequently mentioning "at-will employment." My main worry was about salary; they stated they couldn't discuss compensation until after the contract, with any offer then being contingent on the contract period's performance. Essentially, they could offer less than my contract rate post-contract, leaving me with no leverage and forced to accept whatever they offered, as they explicitly said they might offer less based on their "opinion" of my contract work. Despite performing exceptionally well in the interview and being upfront with the interviewers, who all expressed positive feedback, I was rejected because I raised too many concerns and asked too many questions about the contract terms. This approach is highly unprofessional and suggests a problematic environment, especially given the recruiting company's role in placing candidates in such situations.
