I was contacted by an in-house recruiter. We had a 30-minute call. Then, I met with the hiring manager for 30 minutes, followed by a 30-minute meeting with the CPO. Although I didn't move forward, the next step would have been a panel interview, consisting of 3-4 interviews with various stakeholders and a case study.

Interviews started late, and some folks asked weird questions like what gives you energy. They asked a lot of data science questions too early on, even though they didn't have data science experience. Pay transparency was bad, and they weren't following California law, being evasive about pay ranges and pushing me to give one first. They seemed to favor health tech experience, even though they hadn't worked in health tech themselves. The product sense and metrics interview felt like asking for free ideas because it was so specific to Clover Health, and it wasn't a fair playing field since they had way more context than I did.

The interview process was pretty simple: first a recruiter call, then a take-home assignment (which was a bit strange since I hadn't spoken to anyone else yet, but it's a good way to see if a PM can write a spec), followed by a call with a peer PM to review the homework. Then came an onsite panel with 9 people; they did a 2-on-1 format until the last interviewer, the DOP. The 2-on-1 felt unnecessary since the interview was already 5 hours long and candidates talk non-stop. I'm not sure why they added an extra person – maybe for more questions or input? I get that Clover wants to be thorough, but interviewing with so many people for 5 hours straight can be off-putting. The whole thing took about 2 months from start to finish. Overall, the interview wasn't too hard, and I actually liked how Clover broke down each interview type (data science, product management, design, etc.). They did ask some weird questions not related to product management, but more about Clover's day-to-day operational issues, like restructuring their phone lines. I'd tell people looking for product management roles focused on actual products that this isn't it; Clover's PMs work on internal tools and their website, as Clover is fundamentally a health insurance company, not a product company. The experience was mostly positive, and everyone was nice. The only downside was poor communication from the recruiters from the beginning; I had to follow up about the homework 4 weeks after submitting it. They also vaguely mentioned case studies for the onsite interview. They sent a vague rejection email without specific reasons. Clover could definitely improve its interview process.
