First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Clipp.
Media Advertising Sales Representative
I had a phone interview with a recruiter first. Then I met the field manager and regional manager in person at the Hilton Hotel in Gaithersburg for over an hour. About a week later, HR contacted me for three professional references. Another week passed, and I emailed HR to check on my references. They replied that they didn't think my experience matched the position. I don't get why they'd ask for references after the interview if they weren't moving forward, especially since they never called them. I suspect if I hadn't emailed them, they wouldn't have said anything.
- Standard questions with no surprises.
Graphic Artist
Started with the HR director, chatting about my past work and showing my portfolio. Then, I did an InDesign assessment to check my basic skills and design capability. This test involved getting some text, stock photos, and general instructions to create an ad, and I had about an hour for it. About a week later, I had a group interview with the Creative Director, some Art Directors, and managers where I presented my portfolio again. The HR director followed up about 2 weeks after that, but I didn't end up taking the offer.
- What makes you the best candidate for Clipper Magazine?
Advertising Sales
Recruiter hit me up on LinkedIn, super aggressive with calls and emails. The opportunity sounded okay, so I agreed to a phone interview. Recruiter was late and apologized saying 'Oops! Sorry!'. Then she asked about selling print magazine space, which wasn't what I expected (multimedia/integrated marketing). Print is basically dead without digital/email revenue, and this role is strictly cold-calling with no lead gen. So, I passed.
- Are you okay with the fact that this role is entirely cold calling?
Applications Manager
I interviewed with the director of the department this role reports to. They asked some really unique questions. After the interview, I was told I'd hear back either way, but then I got ghosted. I sent two follow-up emails to my interviewer and got no response. It's pretty unprofessional to promise a response and then not give one.
- If you were given $40,000 to launch a business, what would be your approach?
- What is a single activity that you could imagine yourself doing for your entire professional career?
