I applied online. A few months passed, and then I got invited to take a civil service exam. The scores came out about a month later. The top three scores were sent to different departments over the next few months, and those departments asked for updated resumes and cover letters. I got called for interviews with three different divisions. Two of the three interviews had computer-based skill tests along with a panel interview where people sat across from me and asked questions from a printed list. One person took notes while the others asked. About a month after that, one of the departments requested a fingerprint background check. A couple of weeks after that, I got the official offer letter, and I accepted it.

Confirmed questions1 question
  • For two of the interviews, I was asked about my motivation for wanting to work for that specific department. It's a good idea to have a solid answer ready, because the department that made me the offer didn't ask this question.

after going through (and passing) the mandatory testing, I was invited in for a panel interview. The interview lasted all of a bout 45 minutes and involved questions in regards to how previous experience matched the job. The usual types of questions trying to relate your job experience with their needs. I was encouraged to go through this process right out of grad school by a senior person within the organization, but was told I wasn't offered the position due to lack of experience.
