First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at City and County of San Francisco.
Intern
It was good, they had me come in person. There was a sheet of questions that you looked at for 5 minutes, then they would go down the list and you ask them one after another. They aren’t really able to ask follow ups due to “fairness” policies, so be very descriptive in your answers.
- They had a list of questions that they read off of and you had the sheet of questions in front of you.
Contracts Manager
Went through an online assessment first, then had a panel interview. It was a virtual interview and the format felt a bit awkward because many of the interviewers didn't actually work in the office the job was for. They asked standard questions about contract management and how I'd handle audits, along with questions about my past experience.
- Can you tell me about a time you faced an audit and how you handled it?
Public Relations Assistant
The interview process was very easy. There were two interviews and then a background check. I got an offer, but I turned it down because I found a job closer to home. The background check took a really long time and they asked for more information than usual. I think that was the hardest part to get through.
- How do you handle conflict?
Management Assistant
I applied online. A few months passed, and then I got invited to take a civil service exam. The scores came out about a month later. The top three scores were sent to different departments over the next few months, and those departments asked for updated resumes and cover letters. I got called for interviews with three different divisions. Two of the three interviews had computer-based skill tests along with a panel interview where people sat across from me and asked questions from a printed list. One person took notes while the others asked. About a month after that, one of the departments requested a fingerprint background check. A couple of weeks after that, I got the official offer letter, and I accepted it.
- For two of the interviews, I was asked about my motivation for wanting to work for that specific department. It's a good idea to have a solid answer ready, because the department that made me the offer didn't ask this question.
