Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Citadel Securities.
Trader
First round was a trader interview. Started with self-introduction, then tackled probability problems for about 40 minutes. These were pretty tough, so definitely brush up on stats and math beforehand.
- Could you solve some probability problems for 40 minutes? (stats and math)
- What would you say about a poker game with 6 cards?
Trader
I had a one hour call with one of the senior traders. We talked about my past trading experience, then they asked me some trading questions and about the role at Citadel. There were also some technical brainteasers.
- Could you outline the distinctions between exchanges, dark pools, ATVs, and SIs within the European equity market?
- Can you tell me about your previous trading experience?
- What does the role at Citadel entail?
Trader
The interview process started with an HR screening. This was followed by an interview with a junior trader on the fixed income desk, where we talked about my projects, current market events, but no technical or math questions. The final round involved virtual on-site interviews with three senior members of the desk. The first senior interview covered statistics, a puzzle, a deep dive into one of my projects, and the yield curve. The second interviewer was late, and when he arrived, we immediately discussed options. He provided Tesla's current trading details and asked for estimates for calls and puts, also discussing how strike price changes impact option pricing. The third interview was with a quant. It began with deriving the Black-Scholes model, but due to camera and codepad issues, I had to describe the steps for a couple of coding questions, including a greedy algorithm problem. I was disappointed not to get an offer, especially since the first interview went well and the last two were hampered by technical difficulties and lateness.
- What is the price of a Tesla call with a specific strike and expiry?
- I had mentioned Tesla in my cover letter.
