The entire process usually takes about 3 to 5 weeks from the initial contact to receiving an offer. It's typically done online these days, but some parts might be in person or a mix depending on where you are. The usual setup goes something like this (or a bit differently): first, a recruiter chat, then a coding test or online assessment, followed by technical interviews covering coding and system/design aspects, a behavioral interview, and sometimes a case study or business-focused interview.

Technical Coding

The interview was largely unrelated to the job description listed (Chicago based). The description was for a .NET engineer, yet half the questions were about front-end and databases. I was told by the recruiter that the interview would be a .NET live coding session, but it was actually just a bunch of "define these terms", like they searched "software engineer questions to ask" 5 minutes before the interview. If you're hiring for a backend .NET engineer (not fullstack), why are you asking questions about SQL and Javascript? (which weren't mentioned anywhere on the JD). If you truly want a fullstack dev, advertise that on the job description and increase the pay accordingly (because the rate they're hiring for is FAR below the compensation for a fullstack dev).

I got referred and applied. The recruiter seemed rushed. They called and immediately pushed for a technical interview the next day or within a couple of days, which felt odd since there was no initial recruiter chat. The interview itself was about an hour long and included the hiring manager, a recruiter, a senior dev, and an HR person. They were mostly looking for Go lang developers. I handled the Go lang questions well. They focused a lot on API design and security questions. I never heard back after following up about the outcome. Essentially, I was ghosted with no closure.
