The initial interview was quite lengthy and included a lot of personality assessment questions. While the interviewer wasn't rude, they seemed to deliberately try to intimidate and unsettle me by asking many of these. The future career path is somewhat unclear, and there are some odd power dynamics at play.

I applied online in Berlin. The first interview was with HR and it was good, asking about my past experiences. They make software for restaurants to order food from suppliers, and they promote it as a green initiative, which I found a bit unclear how it relates to food waste, but I like digitalization. I moved to the second stage, which I think went badly. I didn't feel a connection with the interviewer. He initially responded 'Tentative' to the invitation, which made me uneasy. I couldn't understand many of his questions, and he couldn't explain what was needed, leading to many failures. He also mentioned that they have to 'wear many hats and do responsibilities we weren't hired to do,' which lowered my expectations. I didn't pass. I told HR about the interview, and they explained the interviewer was sick the day before and might have lacked energy. HR stated that my failure was final and wouldn't be changed. It felt like an unfair interview for both of us. There were many red flags: interviewing with tired people, the 'wear many hats' mentality, and the disconnect between the product's stated goal and its actual function. I don't see it as my failure, but rather as a sign to avoid a startup with an understaffed engineering department.
