Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Chime.
Software Engineer
The interview process was straightforward. It started with a phone interview, followed by a coding interview with an engineer. The third round involved four separate meetings: a coding round, a system design session, and a manager discussion. They got back to me quickly to let me know I wasn't moving forward and offered to schedule a call for feedback if I wanted it.
- Can you share an instance when you had to deliver negative feedback?
Software Engineer
The interview process started with a phone screen, then an onsite interview, and finally an offer. Despite the great interviewers, the process was frustrating due to poor communication from the recruiter. After the onsite, he mentioned 'super positive feedback across the board' but subsequent steps like team matching and the offer itself took a very long time. He often missed promised follow-up dates, requiring me to chase him for updates, after which he'd respond quickly. It was a very stressful experience. When it came to the offer stage and I shared my updated compensation needs due to other higher offers, I was ghosted until I followed up. They then stated all positions had been filled, likely due to running out of headcount. Better communication and sticking to promised timelines would significantly improve the candidate experience.
- Can you answer some classic coding questions?
- How would you approach system design questions?
- Tell me about yourself and your experiences (behavioral questions).
Software Engineer
The whole thing took about a month from the first chat with the recruiter. It breaks down into four main parts: 1. Recruiter chat, 2. Manager chat, 3. A technical check (could be easy or a bit harder depending on you), and 4. The final on-site interviews which had 3 sections. These covered both tech and behavioral stuff. You can practice the kinds of questions they ask. The main thing for the tech parts is to talk through your thinking. The interviewers were really nice and engaging during the technical parts. For the behavioral questions, just be yourself and talk about your past work. Honestly, it was a really good interview experience, and they kept in touch the whole time. Big props to the recruiting team for making it a smooth process!
- Can you provide examples of behavioral questions?
- What kind of technical questions were asked?
- Are the technical questions similar to those found on HackerRank or LeetCode?
