First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Chime.
Software Engineering Manager
The interview process with Chime was really great. First, I spoke with the recruiter and got awesome information about the company. Then, I interviewed with the hiring manager who wanted to understand my leadership style. After that, there were two 45-minute interviews focusing on product delivery and people management. The final round had 3 interviews, each 45 minutes, with a more technical focus. I didn't get to do the final round because the role was filled.
- Describe a situation where you assisted another team with a task that wasn't part of your responsibilities.
Engineering Manager
It started with a phone screen with a technical recruiter. The role was presented as very technical, and indeed, all the questions were technical. They focused on my past projects and experience, but surprisingly, there were no questions about team management, building trust, or rapport. They also didn't provide helpful details on what they were looking for. The next stage was with the hiring manager. They described the role as more of a director-level position, primarily focused on setting strategic direction. The team is apparently co-managed, but without any explanation on how this shared responsibility dynamic would work. It felt like I was interviewing for his job, and I was totally unprepared. It was a complete waste of time for everyone involved.
- What is your understanding of Chime?
Engineering Manager
The interview process started with a recruiter call which I thought was exploratory but turned out to be an interview. Then I had a phone call with the Director. After that, there were two onsite interviews with other Engineering Managers, and a few more onsite interviews that I didn't end up attending. I interacted with at least three recruiters, and they all seemed confused about things. I was initially told I did well, but then later informed I didn't, which was another point of confusion. There were long wait times, and I frequently had to follow up. They always blamed it on production issues or busy teams. It was strange that they kept reaching out to ask me how the interviews went instead of checking with their own interviewers. The interviewers I spoke with seemed empathetic and smart. However, they asked the same set of questions in almost every interview, which felt like a huge waste of time. I'm glad I didn't commit a full day for the onsite interviews because, based on their interview approach, it seems they haven't invested in training their interviewers.
- Tell me about your management philosophy.
- Describe a time you had to manage an underperforming employee.
