Intern
I submitted an online application which included some questions about my high school classes and why I like biology. There were only a few short answer questions, and I needed one letter of recommendation. The acceptance rate for my graduating class (2023) was only about 10%.
- We have seen your grades and activities in your application; now go beyond this and tell us your story. What is it that you think we should know about you?
- What do you want to accomplish in LA-HIP, and how does it align with your interest in science?
- If you had the opportunity to teach a class, what would the class topic be about? Why?
Manager
The whole thing took about 2 months from the first chat to getting the offer, which is a little slow, but they kept me in the loop the whole time. First up was the hiring manager, then the team, and finally the director of the program. It was pretty straightforward and everyone was nice and into it.
- Could you describe your approach to leadership?
- How do you deal with challenging individuals or circumstances?
- What's your method for resolving conflicts?
Clinical Research Coordinator
I had a call with the supervisor for a quick phone screen where they reviewed my resume and experience. We then set an interview date, but the invite they sent had a different time. The main interview was with the team and supervisor, though the team led most of it. They were really keen on explaining the job and seemed to oversell the company. About two weeks later, Talent Acquisition contacted me with an offer. Just so you know, there's no salary negotiation, maybe a tiny increase if you try. I declined because of that. The interview itself was mostly good, and the team seemed decent.
- What motivated your interest in CHLA and this specific role?
- Could you please introduce yourself?
- Can you share an instance of dealing with a stressful situation and how you managed it?
Data Scientist
So it was 2 rounds of interview. The first interview was with the hiring manager and it only lasted about 6 minutes. Then, surprisingly, I got an invite for an onsite interview, which I accepted. Overall the interview process was okay, but the main issue was that they never got back to me after the interview. I followed up with HR three times and they kept saying they'd let me know once the hiring team made a decision. Two months later, I tried contacting the hiring manager directly, but still no response. It was pretty rude and unprofessional, especially considering they asked me to travel 9 hours, arrive at 10 PM, interview at 9 AM, then take me to the airport 7 hours before my flight, and I had a 10-hour flight back. To top it off, neither HR nor the hiring manager bothered to send a simple email!
- Could you elaborate on your project presentation?
- What questions did they ask regarding your projects?
