First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at CertainTeed.
Automation Engineer
First, there was a phone interview with HR. They looked over my resume and asked about my strengths and weaknesses, world class manufacturing, and PLC experience. Then, I had an onsite interview with the hiring manager and the automation team. We also did a plant tour. They asked me random stuff based on my resume, like about a project I did at school, and also about SQL, PLC, VFD, drawings, and AutoCAD.
- Can you tell me about your strengths and weaknesses?
- Could you explain the project you worked on?
- What do you know about world class manufacturing?
EHS Manager
I submitted my application and about two weeks later, got a call for a phone interview. I gave my schedule, and a phone screen was set up for the next afternoon. While looking over my resume, the recruiter noticed a date discrepancy for a job that ended in December 2020. My resume showed I worked from 2020-2021, but the job was from the beginning of 2020 to the start of 2021. The recruiter was not happy and said dates are very important. I admitted when I worked there and explained it was not an attempt to hide anything. The recruiter then became very rude and indicated this misunderstanding had happened before and was not her problem. She was not friendly or accommodating after this, which ended my chances of working there and their chances of hiring me.
- Can you go over my resume from the start to my last position?
- Can you discuss my ability to do the job given this misunderstanding about the dates?
Development Chemist
The process started with a phone interview with a recruiter, then there was a virtual interview. The virtual interview was weird because I couldn't see the interviewer, and they didn't seem to care when I told them. It was hard to have a good conversation and felt unfair. Some questions didn't seem to match the job description. I was supposed to hear back by the end of the month, but I had to chase them for an update. I think I would have been ghosted if I hadn't followed up. It's crazy how companies act like this, especially with the current job market.

Mechanical Engineer
Got referred by an employee and had a phone interview set up. The interviewer never called at the scheduled time and only emailed back 2-3 days later, saying something came up, which I found pretty rude. That phone interview was mainly about my school engineering projects and the job itself. They scheduled an in-person interview over a month later and I was flown out, with all expenses covered. The interviews were in the plant, with several 30-minute sessions, and it ended with a plant tour. HR said we'd hear back the next week. I sent a thank you email the next day, and another email a week later. The following week, I called and left a message, but still no response, not even a text. I had to reach out to a different HR person to find out I didn't get the job. Four weeks after that, my original HR person emailed to say I didn't get it, even though the decision was made way earlier. The HR department really made this a negative experience overall.
- What would you say is your biggest strength?
- Tell me about your biggest weakness.
- Can you describe an instance where you assumed a leadership role?
