Mechanical Engineer
The interview process was really technical and structured. First, I had to give a presentation about my background and some key projects I've worked on. After that, we went deep into the specific technical choices I made during those roles. Then, there was a high-level technical chat about engineering fundamentals, focusing on thermodynamics, materials science, and mechanics of solids. Finally, they asked me some situational questions about my past experiences to see how I handle problem-solving and teamwork in a professional setting.
- Can you identify these two equations (Von Mises and Tresca yield criteria), explain their differences, and tell me which one you would use and why?
Architect
It was a two-step process. The first step was online, with 5 questions, preparation and recording in front of a camera. Two months later, I was invited to a second step, shortlisted among 3 candidates. The HR told me that a response would be communicated within 2 weeks after the interview, ideally to start at the beginning of the next month. After a thank you for the interview, I followed up after 6 weeks - no response.
- Can you describe a difficult situation you managed and what you would do differently now?
CNC Machining Technician
The interview process had several stages spread out over time. It started with submitting a CV and answering a few questions. Then, there was an online asynchronous interview that I could do on my own time. The next part was a virtual meeting with about five people, lasting around 45 minutes. There was also a 45-minute technical assessment with two people, and a presentation, which was part of the board interview. The last step was an in-person day with both theoretical discussions and practical tests. Overall, it was a long process, but it was good because I got a lot of guidance and clear communication from HR.

Radiation Protection Technician
I was reached out to by CERN HR on LinkedIn to apply, which I did. Then came the final interview, a 50-minute panel with 6 interviewers. I had to give a 7-minute presentation about my career journey, which I worked hard on timing. After that, there were some basic questions about my motivation and behavioral skills. The interview day wrapped up with a 30-minute technical interview where they really dug into my technical knowledge. It was pretty stressful, but the clear structure and the panel's professionalism made it go smoothly. I tried to keep my answers concise, but I definitely rambled a bit. A week later, I heard back from HR with valuable feedback, even though I didn't get the job. This feedback was super helpful since I don't interview much. They were honest and constructive. HR provided all the necessary resources to prepare, and I studied CERN policies, RP practices, and successful candidate interviews. I redid my career presentation about 20 times to make sure it was perfect. The recruiter in charge was exceptionally communicative, professional, and positive. They answered my questions clearly and promptly. My advice for staff positions is to closely follow the job posting and heed HR's preparation guidance. Have relevant questions that aren't easily found online. It's okay to show some personality, and if you're shy, practice by videoing yourself.
