& Process

Got there 15 minutes early and waited upstairs with the other applicants for the managers to ready the conference room for us to start our group interview. Roughly 10 people were there, we sat at tables and did a series of activities and answered some basic questions and introduced ourselves to the room. Following the group interview were 1 on 1's (not everyone got to do them-- they called out a few people from the room and I'm assuming they let them go gently before starting the real thing). One on one was a lot less intense, the questions revolved around work experience and your people skills/how you handle grumpy customers, etc. A hiring manager and the manager of the department you're applying for sit in for the small interview. One asks questions, the other writes them down and they're pretty nice people. Easy to talk to. After that, if they liked your answers, they'll usually offer you on the spot. We discussed benefits, the rest of the process, pay, and if I had any questions.

It took about a month from applying online to getting an interview. The process kicked off with a group interview where around 20 candidates met with 3 to 4 hiring managers. Those who did well stayed put while managers selected groups or individuals for a solo interview, letting others know if they were moving on or going home. I waited about 20 minutes before my solo interview, which went really well because the managers were super nice. The whole thing took about 2 hours and was pretty tiring, but everyone was kind.

The process was pretty fast, about 2 hours or a bit more if you move past the first impression part. I had gotten a spot through Eventbrite. Upon arrival, I received a freebie bag and some breakfast. I hadn't applied for a position but mentioned my interest in the In-Store Shopper role, so they took my name. It's best to apply beforehand, even if the flyer doesn't say so. We were seated in the culinary kitchen, which was busy. After about 30 minutes, a group of us were called to a conference room where department leads were present to assess candidates. They introduced themselves, and we did too. Many questions were asked on paper. One involved recreating your resume on a plate setting to describe yourself. Speak clearly and loud enough to be heard, and being fluid with your descriptions is a plus, not the questions themselves. I shared my pros and cons to seem imperfect. We were given a smaller sheet with 4 questions and instructed to verbally answer one. The questions were about cooking experiences (alone or in a group, successes/struggles), dealing with a recipe that didn't go as planned, using a favorite ingredient, or recommending a kitchen tool. After this, department leads deliberated on who would be a good fit and moved on to more one-on-one interviews focusing on availability, receiving feedback, and handling difficult customers. My second interview was scheduled two days later due to the interviewer's travel. Overall, it was a good experience. After the group questioning, I spoke with other interviewees. Once selected, you'll get an email for initial sign-ups, choosing your start date for I-9 and work info, and getting your uniform. Day 2 is orientation where you wear your uniform. Your outermost layer must have the Central Market logo, and you can wear jeans, black pants, khakis, or knee-length shorts with no rips. They said you can take as many shirts as needed, but I wish I'd taken more because I need to order more and use a laundromat. Note your planned weekly hours. A clean appearance and good personal hygiene are very important.
