First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at CATERPILLAR.
Product Development Engineer
So you go through 3 rounds of interviews. The first round is a casual phone chat with an engineer, could be from any department. If they like you, the next step is a Teams video call with HR for some deep behavioral questions. After that, HR sends your resume to a committee to decide your home department. If the hiring manager likes you and has openings, you'll have a final, more intense STAR-style online interview. Even though I did well in interview 2 and was told I'd be approved, I got rejected. I think I applied too late in the process and they'd already met their hiring goals (was at 130 out of 150, and they usually expect applications a year in advance for a June start).
- What made you want to be an engineer?
- Describe a time you dealt with a disagreement at work.
Software Engineer Intern
I didn't have any technical interviews, but I went through a few rounds of behavioral interviews. It all ended with a zoom call with the manager I would be working with. I also had a phone conversation with another engineer about my resume.
- Can you describe your past experiences using the STAR method, drawing from your resume?
Software Engineer
Don't even bother interviewing for this role! They're closing out job postings even at the offer stage. If you don't want to waste your time, don't apply. The recruiter said I did great, but leadership shut down the job posting before they could make an offer.
- Tell me about a time when... (behavioral question)
- Can you explain Java inheritance?
- What do you know about AWS?
