Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at CARVANA.
Senior Manager
There were 12 rounds of interviews. I asked about the pay range at the start, and they said my number was reasonable but wouldn't give me a specific range. They also wouldn't tell me who the hiring manager was or what team the role was for. I felt completely in the dark and have told my friends not to interview there. The offer they made was 30% less than I wanted. If they had told me the range on day one, I wouldn't have gone through the process.
- Tell me about a time when...
Manager
I had a phone interview with the recruiter, and then two more interviews in the same week. The first interview went really well and felt positive. The last interview was just okay, like the interviewer had already decided before we even started talking. The whole process was wrapped up in a week. I think they should be upfront about how many interviews there are and when you can expect a decision.
- How have you handled disagreements with colleagues in the past?
Manager
I had an interview at Carvana for a Manager position. I have a lot of experience in similar tech companies and the highest certifications in my industry. I interviewed on three different dates, and my recruiter seemed happy to have me back for more interviews. Everything seemed to be going well on my third interview trip until a senior leader asked me if I thought I had the energy for a start-up given my experience. I was taken aback by this question, feeling it implied a concern about my age and ability to work hard. Despite having three good interview sessions, I received a rejection email. I observed that most employees at the Carvana corporate location appeared to be under 35, suggesting a potential age bias in their hiring, particularly for roles like manager.
- Considering your background, do you feel you possess the necessary energy for a start-up environment?
