Technical Coding Behavioral Case

The interview process at Carvana felt extremely broken and like a massive time sink. It started with a recruiter screening and follow-up call, then moved into a take-home SQL coding assessment, followed by a technical skills round with a Senior Manager. After that, there were 8 additional rounds focused mainly on team fit, involving Directors and Senior Directors across multiple departments. At that point, the process felt excessive, poorly designed, and completely disproportionate to the role. I was honestly amazed that so many senior leaders had that much time available for such a drawn-out interview loop. Overall, the experience came across as inefficient, exhausting, and not respectful of candidates' time. To add to it, they flew me into Tempe for a day, extended an offer and then rescinded it due to inefficiency in visa transfer from their end.

First, there was an HR call where I was asked to do a self-introduction, talk about my SQL and Python experience, when I could start, my salary expectations, and my expectations for my next role. They also asked if I could commit to a 5-day onsite work week.

I applied online and heard back pretty quickly. The recruiting team was helpful and communicative, although a bit small. I had a quick phone screen and then an in-person interview with a few different people. It was good practice since I'm not the best interviewer. I got a rejection, which was as nice as they can be, but the feedback was a bit vague. I think it was more about my general fit for the company rather than specific interview mistakes. The company seems to want edgy, tech-savvy people, and if you're used to more traditional workplaces, it might not be for you. Their HQ is a bit of a free-for-all, which seems fun but I don't know how work gets done. If you're collaborative and entrepreneurial, it might be appealing. If you prefer structure and an established organization, look elsewhere. Overall, it was a decent experience.
