I applied online and got an automated email to do an assessment. It was half personality and half basic math. Then the HR recruiter called and set up a phone interview. Buyers at CarMax work retail hours, including weekends and holidays, on a rotating schedule where some weeks are evenings and weekends, others are days, or both. They expect you to be available whenever they schedule you with no notice, so don't plan other activities needing advance scheduling. Your time is theirs 24/7 during store hours. If you have scheduled outside activities, like coaching your kid's team, you'll have to give that up. Don't mention those if you want the job. CarMax says 'Putting People First' is a core value, but their scheduling seems to conflict with that.

First, I had a phone call with a recruiter, then I had to complete a personality survey. About a week after that, I interviewed with both a purchasing manager and a senior buyer. Overall, it was a pretty good experience.

Applied and waited a while, then got a call for a basic screening of my cover letter and qualifications. Was scheduled for an interview where I met with two buyers. Then, I had another interview with a senior manager and the initial two buyers. Following these interviews, I completed a computer-based skills test covering math, scheduling, and word comprehension. A urine test was also administered around the same time. The whole thing took about 5 hours.
