First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at CarMax.
Sales Associate
We had a phone interview first, then an in person one. In the in person, I had to talk about myself and my past experiences. They really care about customer service, so be ready for that. The last bit was a role play, like selling a car.
- Tell me about yourself.
- What experiences do you have related to customer service?
- Can you role play selling this car?
Sales Associate
I applied for the job and HR reached out in about 3 days. They did a quick phone interview and then I was called in for an interview. I interviewed with one manager and then I did a sales demonstration with another manager.
- Show me how you would sell a vehicle.
- How would you approach a person's hesitation?
- How would you try to get someone to do a test drive?
Sales Associate
First, there's a really long online questionnaire that takes about an hour and a half, so make sure you have enough time. After you finish that, a Sales Manager will give you a call for a quick screening. If you pass that, you'll head in for your in-store interview. This will be with two Sales Managers. They'll have you go outside and actually start the sales process with a pretend buyer. It's basically a fact-finding mission to appraise their car and find talking points. Look for little clues, like bumper stickers related to a child's school or sports, and then ask about it. They want to see if you can connect with the customer. For example, if you see an honor roll sticker, you could ask about their child's grade and then transition to asking if they're looking for a new family car. Next, you'll need to help sell the features and benefits of a car they pick out. Just be relaxed, friendly, and smile. It's okay if you mess up a little; you can stop and say you're nervous and meant to say something else. After this, they'll either say thanks and call you later, or if they really like you, you'll meet with the store manager. You'll do a drug test (urine sample) and then potentially get a job offer. Things move fast. Just know this is a 7-day-a-week operation, so working nights and weekends is mandatory. Asking for special schedule accommodations is really tough. Some stores have part-time, but it's rare.
- Can you share an experience with a challenging customer and how you managed it?
- Is working a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends, something you're comfortable with?
