Senior Account Manager
A recruitment company reached out about a Senior Key Account Manager role at CareerBuilder. My CV was submitted, and I was initially informed I wasn't successful. However, I leveraged my network, which positively changed the outcome. Shortly after, I had a 1-hour call with the Managing Director in Germany. Following that, I was invited to their headquarters in Munich for an in-person interview. I met with the managing director first, and then with someone from sales. Regarding the process and expectations, I'm unsure if they genuinely know what they're seeking. They were quick to make assumptions without really asking for my input. First, they assumed I'm better suited for a management position and overqualified for sales or account management (I enjoy sales and don't see myself as a manager right now). Second, they assumed I might be uncomfortable with cold calling and building my own pipeline (which is standard in sales). What was most concerning were their responses about the sales process and current opportunities. They stated a typical sales cycle is 12 months for a basic recruiting tool and that 50 opportunities need to be generated in 3 months. From my experience, I estimate half of those might be unproductive, lacking key criteria like a decision-maker, project, or budget.
- Tell me about a time you made a mistake in a decision.
- What has been the most challenging sale you've made?
- What are the usual objections customers raise?
Account Manager
The office has a great, young, and fast-paced environment with cubicles. It's a long interview process for a job that doesn't pay well. A Senior Level Department Manager mentioned that 25% of people get fired or quit within their first 90 days. It felt like a pyramid scheme: you do all the hard work during a 'ramp up' period, and if you succeed, they retroactively give you the commission you should have earned during those 90 days. I met with people at all levels and received an offer letter, but I declined. I wanted to see what it's like to work for CB, but they're very secretive about it, even though their services are simple and almost anyone could start a similar company. Essentially, you're on probation the entire time unless you're 'killing it,' which you'll hear a lot. Good luck. The only perk was that everyone was young, eager to make money, and social. It's a great first job for a hungry graduate.
- Is it not difficult to be a hawk and work in a cubicle where all your work is recorded and documented for QA?
- If you complete your project and present it well and get asked to meet with one of the directors, will you receive the offer?
Account Manager
I was contacted by an offsite recruiter who handled all the scheduling, though they weren't the easiest to get in touch with. The interview itself lasted over an hour and involved two interviewers. They asked questions about my current job duties and general customer service experiences. We also chatted a bit about how long I've known my referral. I got the offer two days after the interview.
- Can you describe a strength you possess that also presents a challenge for you?
- What are your responsibilities in your current role?
- Can you share an example of a customer service interaction?
