Sales Development Representative
A recruiter from Carbon Black reached out to me on LinkedIn and we had an initial call to discuss the role. Following up on those conversations, I had a brief phone chat with one of the managers at CB. After that, I was invited for an in-person interview at their Waltham, MA office. During the onsite visit, I got a tour, chatted with some employees about the company and industry, and then met with three managers to learn more about the job. I had about 10-15 minutes after each manager chat to ask my own questions. Everyone was really nice and the conversations were easy. Definitely prepare some questions to ask them beforehand.
- Could you tell me about your interest in sales?
- What drives you in your work?
- What makes you believe you'd be a great candidate for this position?
Sales Development Representative
Got a quick initial response and then a good first and second phone call. The in-person interview was a mess and totally disorganized. They didn't even stick to who was supposed to interview me or in what order. Plus, midway through the third interview, the interviewer had to leave for an "emergency" meeting. They then called off the last two interviews I had scheduled for that day, even though one was with HR and not sales, so it wasn't related to the "emergency." They cancelled the final two after I had already driven four hours to get there. It was super unprofessional and really showed that this startup hasn't got its act together. A few days later, I was told I wouldn't get the job because I hadn't done any internships during the school year. They don't consider your school's ranking, your course load, or your other activities. It seems pointless to apply if you're at a top 50 school because you probably won't have time for many internships.
- Did you check out our LinkedIn profiles?
Sales Development Representative
I applied online and got a referral. The whole thing was super fast, like 2-3 weeks from start to finish. It included a phone screen and then a final in-person stage where I had 4 interviews back-to-back over 2.5 hours. It was cool because the interviews were right outside the sales floor, so I got a real feel for the vibe. I met with my future manager and some senior folks, which was great for understanding what the job is really about and who I'd be working with.
- Regarding sales, what can you tell me about your background?
- How would you approach a prospect who is reluctant to provide details?
- Can you share an instance where you successfully addressed a client's objection?
