Account Manager
So, the first interview was super short, like 10 minutes. They actually schedule a bunch of people at the same time, so you're in the lobby with everyone else waiting, I guess to show you there's competition. The interviewer was nice, easy to talk to. They talk about working with big companies and marketing, but what they don't tell you is that you'll be driving your own car around a 'territory' all day, going door-to-door trying to get people to switch cable providers. If they call you back for a second interview, you ride along with someone already doing the job, shadowing them the whole day. Be ready to do a lot of walking. In my case, we knocked on over 40 doors and made zero sales, and it seemed like it's all commission, so the person I shadowed made nothing. It is what it is. But the thing is, when I asked about it being door-to-door sales before the second interview, they were cagey, talking about marketing for big companies instead of being upfront. I think they do that because not many people would come if they knew the real deal. It's just not for me. I heard there's potential to move up and get out of the field, but you'd probably have to be a real go-getter. Honestly, they should just be straight up about the door-to-door aspect so people who aren't interested don't waste their time.
- You were given a 10-question quiz at the end of the day, how did you find it?
Account Manager
I applied to Capstone Consultants and the next day got a call for a preliminary interview. When I got there, I met with a hiring manager who said it'd be a quick meet and greet with basic questions and a job description. He mentioned a second interview would be a full day job shadow from 2-8 if I was selected. I got invited back for the second interview and arrived at 2 p.m. I was paired with a top corporate trainer, and we left the office for the day. In the car, they explained the day's agenda and marketing differences for AT&T U-verse, and how leads work. We went to customers' houses for face-to-face marketing. After lunch, where the advancement structure and four phases to management were explained (which made sense, being merit-based and commission-based, though a bit intimidating), we interacted with more customers. By the end of the day, we helped two people set up new AT&T accounts. The trainer made over $200 in 5 hours.
- Can you explain the distinctions between direct and indirect marketing strategies?
- How do you interpret the law of averages?
Account Manager
Applied online and within a few days, a hiring manager called me. It wasn't a typical phone screen, just a quick chat to say they got my resume and the management team wanted to see me in person. The in-person meeting was also short – more of a meet and greet. I chatted with Brandon, the President, who was really nice and made me feel comfortable. Then, they invited me back for a final interview the next day. This time, I went to lunch with a manager. We talked about me and my experience, then discussed the role and the company. While I liked the vibe and the people, I realized it wasn't the right fit. It turned out to be door-to-door sales with pay entirely based on weekly commissions, and no benefits.
- Can you share three qualities that define you?
- Could you tell me something about your background?
