Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Canon.
Account Executive
I had a really disappointing interview. I thought it went great and the hiring manager liked me, but then I mentioned I wear a headscarf. They said they couldn't hire me because clients might not like it. It felt unfair and shows how bias can get in the way of professional skills.
- Regarding your headscarf, do you wear it when visiting clients, and would you consider removing it?
Account Executive
The interview process was challenging. A key part involved a "Sell me a pen" scenario where I had to demonstrate how I would handle multiple rejections and recover. The team lead was very strict and serious, and the Department head was cautious. They seemed to really look for candidates who were eager and driven to make sales.
- Can you tell me why you decided to join Canon?
Account Executive
The interview process was spread out over three weeks with three separate conversations. It felt unnecessarily long and lacked continuity between discussions, with hiring managers not following up as promised. I was asked to prepare a business presentation but didn't end up presenting it.
- Can you share a time you faced client pushback and describe how you handled it?

How would you try to get an initial meeting with a buyer or IT person from a company that's looking at different phones for their staff, but isn't even considering Nokia? This is a role-play, and you're going to do a mock sales call with the Accounts Manager.”
