I applied for a software developer position and after a few months got an interview invitation. First, I had a standard chat with HR, then a technical phone screen in C++ with the VP of engineering. The interview felt a bit off and gave a small company vibe. The phone screen had typical C++ questions on topics like operator overloading and polymorphism, which the interviewer seemed to be reading from a list. He liked textbook answers, but when I explained a concept using an example, he struggled to understand. It felt like he only accepted answers matching his list. The interview difficulty was average. A few days later, I was told I didn't pass. I later had a harder C++ interview elsewhere which I passed, so I'm unsure if it was the interviewer's or my C++ skills that led to my rejection.

Behavioral Technical

First, I had a phone chat with HR to get a feel for the type of person I am and my past experiences. Then, a phone call with the direct manager, which was more technical but still focused on understanding my personality, interests, and motivations. The in-person stage involved meeting with HR again to recap, discuss hypothetical situations, and talk about past projects and challenges. Following that, I met with the direct manager again. We talked about the company's development direction and the team's goals. We also had some casual chats about personal interests like video games and beer. The whole hiring process felt really relaxed and open, which I think is key for building trust and a cohesive team. If you're looking for a place that feels like a family and accomplishes great things together while having fun, this is it!

The interview had two phone interview stages. First, a general HR phone interview. Second, a phone interview with a senior scientist. This stage included a background check where I had to elaborate on my related experiences. Then there was a logical question about three mislabeled boxes. Finally, there were programming concepts discussed, with an open question about detecting a cube and a sphere in a 3D image.

Confirmed questions3 questions
  • Can you elaborate on your related experiences during the background check?
  • Regarding the logical question about three wrongly labeled boxes containing fruits, what is the minimum number of times you need to pick a fruit to correctly identify the contents of all boxes?
  • For the programming concepts part, if you have a 3D image containing a cube and a sphere, how would you go about detecting these objects?

I applied online and got a call from HR the next day. Then I had a 30 minute phone screen and they emailed me that night to schedule another phone screen in 2 days. After that, I interviewed in person 5 days later and got an offer a week after that. The whole thing took about 2-2 1/2 weeks.

Confirmed questions4 questions
  • Tell me about your background, why you're interested in Vital Images, the strengths you'd bring to the team and company, and give me some examples of work situations.
  • Can you walk me through your background and explain why you are interested in Vital Images?
  • What strengths do you possess that would benefit our team and the company?
