First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at California Franchise Tax Board.
Tax Technician
I did a 30-minute hiring exercise and then a 15-minute panel interview with three people asking questions. The interview went pretty fast, but it took a while to get the offer because the state moves pretty slowly. It was for a PI role with hybrid work.
- How would you manage a customer who is angry?
Tax Technician
I had an interview with three women who asked me questions from a list. The interview was 45 minutes long and I had to answer seven questions, mostly about customer service and handling documents. They didn't elaborate on their questions or ask any follow-up questions. After they finished, I asked them about six or seven questions regarding when they planned to make an offer, the probationary period, and training.
- How would you handle an irate customer?
Tax Auditor
You gotta use your tax knowledge to do audits or financial exams of taxpayer's accounts and records. You'll meet with people or org reps who are subject to tax or regulation and get their cooperation. You need to make sure they feel good about the audit process, even when you have to share findings that are critical or show they owe more tax. Gotta be able to analyze data and reach good conclusions, analyze stuff accurately and do something about it. You need to write up reports that are clear, complete, and concise. Also gotta communicate well and be good with computers.
- What is your approach to conducting a tax audit?
Tax Auditor
The interview process involved two interviews: a 30-minute phone screening with two managers (one of whom would be your direct supervisor), and then an hour-long onsite interview with three panels. It was a pretty standard process, no surprises. I actually thought it was the best interview experience I've ever had. Everyone I met was nice and professional. The hiring manager was really helpful and kept me in the loop the whole time.
- Can you tell me about your resume?
