Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at ByteDance.
Manager
The interview process included multiple rounds. The recruiter was great, clear, answered questions, and was pleasant. However, the hiring manager was the opposite. They were on a video call while driving in a car in China. As expected, the connection dropped multiple times, making it impossible to have a conversation. It’s clear this company wants Chinese leaders. Look at their leadership teams and recent lawsuits. Racism clearly thrives.
- Could you tell me about your experience?
- What about your background?
- What are your interests?
Business Manager
I applied on LinkedIn and the recruiters reached out within days. First, I had a phone chat with a recruiter. Then, a video call with the hiring manager, who's in China. Lastly, I went to the Bytedance offices in LA and met several people. It felt like they weren't totally sure about the role's place in the division or were being super hush-hush about their strategy, which made the role seem kinda risky. The pace at Bytedance seemed really fast, with a lot of control from China HQ, and there were some culture clashes between Chinese and Western ways of working. After the interview, I tried to get feedback twice from the HR team (once a week later, then two weeks later), but none of the three HR contacts replied. It seems Bytedance prioritizes business, growth, and making money over the candidate experience.
- What industry connections do you possess?
- Describe your strategy for approaching company Y.
- How would you go about growing business Z?
Senior Manager
The interview process consisted of a recruiter screening, and several 1-on-1 interviews. The process did take a couple of months from initial contact to final offer, primarily because of a re-org that paused the recruitment process. The recruiter, however, stayed in touch and provided weekly updates, and was always available to hop on a quick check-in call.
