First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at ByteDance.
Frontend Software Engineer
The interview time got rescheduled twice, and the last interview started 40 minutes earlier than scheduled. It involved a resume deep dive and questions about frontend fundamentals. The interview was conducted by someone in China, so it took place at 10:30 PM. I received a rejection email the next morning. The interviewer was pleasant, though.
- Could you write the debounce and throttle functions from scratch?
- Please complete this component that uses higher-order functions.
Frontend Engineer
First, they asked some general questions about my previous projects, nothing too deep. Then there were a few quick questions about the React framework. After that, I had to solve a LeetCode medium-level coding problem. Finally, there was a standard Q&A session. Overall, it wasn't too difficult, and the interviewer was really nice and helpful.
- Can you explain the fundamental principles of React?
Frontend Software Engineer
The interview process had 3 rounds in total: 2 technical and 1 behavioral. The first two interviews were delayed because the interviewer was late, pushing the whole process to 3 months. The second interviewer asked very specific, old-school frontend questions that required prior memorization, which I hadn't done. The live coding section involved 5 vanilla JS coding problems in a basic text editor without any helpful features like syntax highlighting or test cases. Since my coding knowledge mainly came from projects and I wasn't well-prepared, I couldn't solve one of the problems. I was later ghosted and received a rejection after I followed up.
