It was really cool. The first stage was via email (in English), the second was in Portuguese at first and then we switched to English, and the last interview is with someone based in China. Basic questions about past experiences, knowledge of the functions, etc.

I applied via LinkedIn and heard back from a recruiter about 2-3 weeks later via SMS. They were interested in my profile for a yet-to-be-opened role (Senior Operations Manager for a new app). I agreed, and got a video chat invite for the next day. The first interview was with a local manager, lasted 45 minutes, and focused on my background and experience. She was very friendly and transparent about the role, and seemed genuinely interested in my responses. Three days later, I had a second video interview with a Sr. Manager from China. This interviewer was less chatty and asked very specific questions about the position, again focusing on my past experience. This lasted about 30 minutes. Another three days passed, and then I interviewed with a director in China. This interview was more formal, and centered on my potential contributions to the product, how I would drive growth, and my approach to retention. After that, I never heard back, which was a bit disappointing as I expected some feedback.

Behavioral Technical

I was first contacted by a recruiter from Bytedance HR. In our initial Webex meeting, I mentioned my limited experience with the specific disruptive tech they were focused on, given my more traditional background. The recruiter assured me this wasn't an issue as they valued transferrable skills. After passing an online test, I had a Webex interview with a Bytedance employee who seemed quite disinterested. Unsurprisingly, this interview heavily focused on my experience with that exact disruptive technology. Although I had done research and tried to familiarize myself with it in the week following the first interview, I was later informed I wouldn't be moving forward. It's confusing when they ask about something the candidate explicitly stated they lack experience in during the first interview, yet proceed to make them jump through hoops. This suggests either poor communication between HR and the hiring team or that they had an internal candidate or were fulfilling a quota, making it obvious they already had someone in mind. Regardless, the whole experience was disappointing. The only positive was the speed of the process, including the rejection, so I wasn't left waiting for weeks.

  • What is your experience with the disruptive technology relevant to this role?
  • How does your background and transferable skills relate to the job requirements?
