Bynder Backend Engineer Interview Questions

I applied online and then had a quick Skype call with the recruiter to chat about the company and what I was looking for. Next up was a technical interview with the team leads where we discussed data structures and algorithms. The final step was a video call with the CTO and HR to see if I'd be a good fit. The whole thing was friendly and moved pretty fast.

I applied online and HR responded the next day. The whole process involved 4 Skype calls and an assignment. The first call was 1 hour with HR, where they talked about the company, the hiring process, and asked about my background, CV, and expectations. The next day, I got a follow-up with a test assignment. A week after submitting the assignment, I received feedback and scheduled the second call. The second call (1 hour) was with the backend chapter lead. It felt like a casual chat between technical experts. We discussed potential improvements to my assignment solution, my technical skills, and the technologies and processes they use. Within two days, I got feedback and the next call was set for a week later. The third call (30 mins) was with the same backend person and the DevOps lead. It was similar to the previous call, but with the addition of DevOps, we discussed related technologies like CI. The fourth call (30 mins) was scheduled a week later with the CTO. We again discussed Bynder's technologies and strategies, as well as my experience and skills that might be useful in the future. This was the final call to confirm I was the right fit. I got feedback the same day and we scheduled a call for the next day to discuss the offer. The experience up to this point was great, but the offer stage was disappointing. There's a law in the Netherlands for a minimum wage for employees needing a work visa (highly skilled migrant). Bynder's offer was €800 below this minimum. When I pointed this out, they claimed ignorance, suggesting the minimum wage might have increased recently. They took time to consider and after 1.5 weeks, informed me they couldn't afford to make the offer. While mistakes happen, their lack of awareness about the minimum wage until I mentioned it made me feel like our time was wasted. If they had known, we wouldn't have needed the four calls. So, overall, I can't say the experience was positive.

The people at Bynder are really nice, super enthusiastic and energetic. The role itself seems interesting on paper. They don't seem to have a super defined recruiting process, but it's not bad, they get straight to the point and you should be ready for some tough technical questions. On a different note, they should really look at their compensation packages, just being a cool startup isn't enough. Stuff like 'the country has a free healthcare system' is not a good reason to skip out on providing any kind of insurance, even a small one.
