I was contacted by a contractor who was recruiting for the company. It seemed like they might have been impacted by the 2023 layoffs based on their LinkedIn. It was a bit confusing because I got emails saying they were passing on me, then that they wanted to do a phone screen. Talking to this person on the call, who was a contractor, left a bad impression. To make matters worse, they insisted on being in the office even though I live in NY. The recruiter rushed and hung up when I said I wasn't interested in hybrid or in-office work. As someone else mentioned, it felt disrespectful and close-minded towards an experienced candidate. Given the company's financial situation and recent layoffs, it feels like a risky long-term move to work there, so I think I avoided a bad situation.

I had a call with a C-level executive between Christmas and New Year's. The interview felt condescending, even hostile, from the beginning. The job description mentioned brand and narrative development across multiple channels for a professional imaging product aimed at doctors and vets. However, it turned out the role was actually focused on e-commerce and online 'influencers.' Coming from regulated B2B healthcare sectors where this channel isn't typically used like other social media, the interview went downhill. I tried to steer the conversation based on my extensive experience in healthcare marketing, challenging markets, and with providers, but couldn't get past the negativity and the set script. Essentially, it was disrespectful to an experienced candidate who was capable and willing to help. Given the company's stock is trading at $1 and they're losing money, it's a risky long-term bet for anyone working there.

So, the interview process started out okay, but then it got kinda messy. After the first chat, they kept changing things for the second round. Like, who I was supposed to talk to kept switching, and what was supposed to be a portfolio review turned into a whiteboard thing, then back to another chat with someone else. Even though I passed the first part and was ready for the review or whiteboard, I didn't get past the second preliminary call because they said I didn't have enough experience. It was a bummer to get ready for the review/whiteboard and then get rejected without even showing my work. The recruiting people were super nice and helpful though.

Technical Case

I got contacted by a recruiter, and we had a brief call to go over my experience and the job details. After that, I did a technical interview with their head data scientist. We spent about an hour discussing a real problem they had and how I'd tackle it. A day later, they set up three more interviews with an engineer, product manager, and customer success manager for the next week, but they filled the position before those happened. Overall, it was a good interview process and should be manageable for anyone with data science experience.

Confirmed questions1 question
  • I was presented with a data science case study and asked to frame the business problem technically, pinpoint crucial metrics, and suggest a solution.
