I had a phone interview with HR, after which I was invited to an assessment centre. Before the main assessment day, I was given a task to complete. The interview day itself was positive, and the overall hiring process was good because HR kept me updated, although there were some small unprofessional moments. However, the assessment task was a negative experience due to its high demands based on a case study. It felt like Bupa was seeking free consultation on their real business issues. Coming from an MBA background and having done similar presentation assessments, the difficulty wasn't the issue, but the sheer amount of work required was annoying, especially since we weren't employees yet and had other commitments. I wish I had more freedom to prepare the task instead of being forced into their exact format, which involved significant industry research and financial modelling for recommendations. It would be better if companies separated the demanding work from the face-to-face interviews, perhaps doing the intensive task only for final candidates after a competency interview, saving others time and opportunity cost. I think many companies exploit the hiring process for business gain. I felt resentful after getting positive feedback on my presentation and then not receiving an offer because I didn't prepare enough for the competency-based interview and was too tired to recall relevant examples. The competency interview was tedious and tough, especially answering questions about situations I hadn't encountered. The questions didn't seem very job-related, focusing instead on ambiguous situations I doubted were relevant to the actual role. I'm sure I wasn't the only one who felt this way about the task; another candidate I met felt the same, believing the company was fishing for extensive free consultation. He's been through many interview processes and found this one excessively demanding for free. I also heard other candidates didn't even make it, likely because they couldn't complete the task, which is understandable. While companies can do what they want legally, I wish they'd respect candidates' time and energy.

I had a 1:1 'formal' interview. The interviewer seemed more interested in his phone than me. He went through my basic skills. He didn't have copies of my CV and seemed to struggle to remember details from it - which wasn't very impressive. There was no structure and no notes were taken. It was a poor standard from a company that probably wants to appear 'professional'. He wasn't clear on the interview process and talked through the wrong selection process.

The interview process involved discussions about my experience and university projects, including how I collaborated with team members and any prior volunteer work in the field. They also inquired about my familiarity with the company.
