During the application they ask a bunch of questions and even ask you to record a video. I spent over two hours writing my answers to make them perfect for the role. The next day they sent me an email saying they got too many applications and I wouldn’t move on to the interview. It felt like a waste of time and energy to put so much effort into that application. If they’re not going to value it, why don’t they make the application simpler and leave the details for a later stage?

Buffer asks everyone to post hiring announcements on LinkedIn, but then they get overwhelmed with applications. They leave the job posts open for weeks, so of course they get flooded. After applying, I had to record a video intro and do a multi-hour take-home assignment. I put in a lot of effort, making a thoughtful Loom video and giving detailed answers. However, Loom shows when videos are viewed, and mine was never opened. It felt like a waste of my time. Even though Buffer talks about transparency and kindness, the hiring process didn't seem to reflect that. Asking for unpaid work that isn't even reviewed feels disrespectful. It seemed like they preferred candidates with a large social media following or a "creator" vibe over actual qualifications. If you don't have a strong personal brand, it's hard to get noticed. I know companies get many applications, but if you value people and authenticity, you should at least look at the work you ask for.

Technical Behavioral Presentation

Buffer really went out of their way to make the interview process feel personal, especially since they had over 1,500 candidates. I did this quick and fun writing assignment and then got to chat with the hiring manager for the writer position. I liked that they were upfront about the whole process and what they were looking for in a teammate, which totally fits with their core values. Even though I was in the top 1% of candidates, I didn't get the job, but I appreciated the follow-up and learning more about the company. Folks who moved on also met with their colleagues and other leaders. I'd definitely apply again for a similar role at Buffer in the future.

Behavioral Technical

A few months ago, I applied for a role at Buffer. I was thrilled to be invited to an initial online interview. To my surprise, during the interview, I was asked if it was okay to record the session, to which I agreed. The interview was scheduled for the day after I received the invitation, so I didn't have much time to prepare, but I felt it went quite well. However, it's now been a couple of weeks since the interview, and I haven't heard back from Buffer. It's disheartening to see the lack of basic decency from representatives at companies. It's only when these same individuals are on the receiving end of ghosting that it becomes a problem, never when they ghost others. If you're thinking about applying for a role at Buffer and reading my feedback, I hope your experience will be better than mine. Good luck
