First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Buckeye International, Inc..
Account Executive
It was a 2-step interview process. I had a phone call with an internal recruiter, and then an on-site interview with the manager and regional director. We talked about my experience, my interest in the role, my knowledge of the territory, and my desired compensation.
- Can you tell me about your previous experience in sales, specifically in B2B environments?
- What is your experience with B2B sales?
- What do you know about the sales territory?
Sales Representative
I had an initial phone screening with the Training and Development Manager that was very positive and informational. We talked for about 45 minutes about the role, and then I took a week to do my research on the company and industry and think about it. I then had another 20-minute call to set up a formal interview for the next week. The formal interview was a 1-hour Zoom call, followed by another 1-hour phone discussion. During this over 2-hour interview, things were going really well and all my questions were answered. They were very upfront about the role and what it entails. But then, in the last 3 minutes, the interviewer said, 'Oh, by the way, our company policy is that everyone must be completely shaven for a neat and tidy appearance. I hope that's not a deal breaker.' For some people, this might not be a big deal, but for others, it could be. I've had facial hair since before high school and have always kept it short and professional, as I've been in sales and business for over 25 years. I was shocked by this old-fashioned idea that the only way to look clean and professional is to be completely shaven, no matter how professional someone looks. While I strongly disagree with this 100% no-exception policy, they are a private company and can discriminate as they see fit in this area. My main issue is that they wasted my time. All the hours spent talking before the interview, researching the company and industry to be informed, and the over 2-hour interview, only for the interviewer to bring up this one non-negotiable aspect of the job. I told the interviewer clearly that anything they consider non-negotiable should be in the job posting or at least one of the first things discussed in the initial screening. This would save everyone time and energy, allowing them to focus on other things. Stop wasting people's time. If you get contacted by this company, you might want to ask them directly about this policy if it applies to you. Good luck!
- Can you commit to overnight travel up to 25% of the time?
- In the final moments of a lengthy interview, it was stated that a requirement is to be 100% clean shaven without any exceptions; is this a deal breaker?
Sales Associate
I spoke with some of the people who actually do the job. They told me about what it's like working there and their career paths instead of a recruiter talking. This gave me a better understanding of the job and how I could grow. They seemed more focused on how they could help me succeed rather than on what I could do for them. They mentioned they have a training program to help me be successful.
- Are you someone who works well in a team?
Sales Management Trainee
The interview process was about an hour long, starting with an in-office interview, followed by a phone interview with a recruiter, and concluding with a final in-office interview where they extended an offer. They deliberately held off on discussing compensation until the third interview, at which point the offer was less than my internship salary and included a $50 car allowance.
- Standard questions, building rapport and probing for more information.
- They just want to get to know you, like most interviews for sales positions.
