First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at BT Group.
Manager
I withdrew my application after the interview. This was one of the worst interviews I've had. The interviewer talked down to me, repeatedly interrupted me to such an extend I didn't even know what I was going to say and didn't even want the job anymore. The interviewer was condescending and rude. At some point, when I was answering yet another vague question, they just got up and left for a moment! Was I supposed to continue talking? Then they 'kindly' informed me I didn't have certain skills they were looking for. Was I invited for the interview to be told this to my face? I left the interview with such a bad impression of the company, I won't be interested in any BT jobs in the future. There's really no need to treat candidates in such a bad way.
- The questions asked were too generic and vague.
Senior Manager
The first chat seemed to go fine, but there was a red flag when an HR person showed up in a technical interview asking only a diversity question. The last round involved a presentation that had a self-contradictory problem statement, so I had to guess what they were actually looking for. Again, an unhelpful HR person was present during the final interview. They seemed unfamiliar with basic product management concepts I brought up in my presentation (seriously, if you don't know what an OKR is in 2024, you shouldn't be in product management). They were unclear about their needs and seemed very bureaucratic.
- Diversity related question.
- Prepare and deliver a presentation detailing your approach to addressing specific challenges within BT's home broadband division, considering current commercial headwinds.
Planning Manager
It's a typical 'tell me how you did it in the past' interview style, which they say dictates how you'll do it in the future. They call it SOARA based interviews. It's not usually hypothetical, or something you can make up. So it's based on demonstrating a capability, like drive, customer focus, etc. Lots of people can bluster their way through this if the interviewer is weak.
- Explain your 30, 60, 90 day plan.
- How do you fire people?
