First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at British Gas.
Product Manager
I got contacted by a recruiter. The process was really fast, and the interview was scheduled within a few days. I had an interview with two team members, but some technical difficulties really threw me off, so I don't think it went that well. I didn't hear back from the recruiter for a while, so I figured I didn't get the job.

Technical Repair Engineer
I had an hour-long interview on Trams. The recruiter was really nice and easy to talk to. They asked me some technical questions related to the job and also some STAR method questions. They went over the role details and I got to ask my questions too. It felt pretty laid-back and welcoming overall.
- Tell me about a time you had to handle a difficult customer. What did you do, and what was the outcome?
Customer Service Advisor
The hiring process was quite frustrating and not at all professional or up-to-date. After applying, I got an email saying they had too many applications and I should call if I wanted an interview, which seemed odd as they weren't screening anyone. On the phone, they asked a few simple competency questions. Then they scheduled an interview for 9 am in two days, which was supposed to be on Teams. They never sent the meeting link, and even after I emailed the day before saying I hadn't received it, their response came after the interview time, just saying 'I am looking into this' without any apology. This disorganized and lacklustre approach from British Gas has made me not want to apply again, and I can't imagine what it's like to work there if they can't even try to attract new people properly. I'm really disappointed they wasted my time and, more surprisingly, that they aren't screening candidates properly or ensuring they provide support for the interview process as required by the Equality Act 2010.

Sales
Telephone call followed by a face-to-face interview. It was fun and challenging, but I wasn't successful even though I had all the right experience, behaviors, and a proven track record of exceeding targets at a brokerage, where I've been for many years. I felt the interviewers were a bit power-mad and maybe intimidated by someone new with a different skillset. My current company gets many ex-British Gas employees, but they usually only last a few weeks due to the immense pressure of working for a brokerage. I actually think if I didn't have the experience or sales talent, I might have gotten the job. I'm writing this hoping someone higher up at Centrica sees this, because managers on power trips are causing them to miss out on people like me.
