First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Brilliant Earth.
Sales Associate
The interview process was smooth and provided great information about the job and daily responsibilities. The interviewer kept the conversation relaxed, which made it easier to answer the questions. I was kept updated on my hiring progress throughout the process.
- What are your long-term career aspirations?
Sales Associate
I found the job posting on Brilliant Earth's website and applied online. I got an email about three days later asking me to schedule an interview at their San Francisco office. The interview was for the sales role, and they told me to get ready for a mock client phone call, so I spent the next week studying the website, especially the diamond education part and what Brilliant Earth is all about. I met with one of the CEOs, the Customer Operations Manager, and someone from the Sales team for the interview. The mock phone call was the main part of the interview, and they all took a lot of notes. I feel like this part is super important because it shows how prepared you are and also your personality and how you talk to customers. I was pretty ready with the website info, but I got stumped on a question about metals, which I hadn't prepared for. When I couldn't answer the metal questions, they helped me figure out how to answer them, so even though it was tough, it felt pretty open and collaborative. The interview lasted about an hour. Nine days later, the Customer Ops Manager called with an offer! We talked back and forth for a few days about benefits and salary. I felt like they really listened to my concerns. I accepted the offer about five days after they made it, so the whole thing took less than three weeks.
- What do you think will be the hardest thing about this job for you?
- Can you explain the different types of metals used in jewelry?
Sales Associate
This interview process was time-consuming, disappointing, and confusing. It started with a phone interview scheduled online at inconvenient times, which was easy to pass. Next, there was a video interview that felt repetitive, mainly involving watching someone demonstrate how to book an appointment, which could have been part of the in-person interview. The multiple steps felt bizarre. The in-person interview was pleasant, allowing me to see the location and meet potential colleagues. The final step was a reference check conducted by a young person out of state. Something went wrong with my references, so I wasn't hired. They mentioned the offer is contingent on references but wouldn't explain what was wrong. The reference checker was rude, making me feel like my time was wasted and the company isn't as good as it seems. The HR person seemed inexperienced in handling negative feedback from references. Hiring decisions should be made by store managers, not out-of-state personnel. This might explain why they always have job openings and lack GIA-trained sales staff, unlike other jewelers.
- Would you be able to submit some writing samples?
