Software Engineer
The interview process included a recruiter call, a hiring manager chat, and a take-home exercise. The recruiter wasn't really prepared. The hiring manager was great though. The take-home project involved designing an API to ingest and query data in real-time, with strict constraints that felt artificial rather than reflective of real-world engineering challenges. The prompt mentioned documentation, testing strategy and general production excellence as judging criteria. I spent several hours on it and got rejected the next day with no explanation or feedback. Be careful about investing time in unpaid work.
- Can you build an API to store and retrieve data?
Software Engineer
I applied via a recruiter, who then passed me to the Software Manager for a brief chat. I was offered a choice for the next step: either a take-home project followed by a coding exercise based on it, or a standard HackerRank style interview. I opted for the take-home project, which had a 3-hour time limit, just for a change. After that, I had a virtual on-site interview that lasted about 3.5 hours. It was a good experience overall, and I got positive feedback, especially since I'm new to applying for senior roles. I enjoyed chatting with the engineers, product manager, and other software managers.
- For the take-home portion, please implement an API for a failover messaging system.
- Could you design a notification system that allows users to create and schedule notifications?
- Can you share an example of your biggest challenges?
Software Engineer
I applied for a staff level role and spoke with the recruiter first. The interviews included a behavioral chat with the hiring manager, then a simple take-home where they wanted an rpc api without disk access. The last part was reviewing the take-home and adding disk access without a DB, a standard system design, talking with product managers (which was the best part), and another behavioral interview. After that, they needed references from my last two managers and a peer. Even though I did great, they offered me a senior role and lowballed me, $20-40k less than the job posting and initial recruiter talk. I asked for another interview and talked to another team lead. He asked me some behavioral questions I'd already answered and then gave me a LeetCode problem. Ultimately, they pulled the offer with no explanation.
- Can you share an instance when...?
