Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Brennan Center for Justice.

It started with a recruiter phone screen, and if I passed that, I had an interview with 4 people. It was the team lead and 3 current research associates. The interview and then subsequent Q&A took about 30-45 minutes.
- Why are you interested in working for the Brennan Center?

Selected candidates got emails. The first interview was with a senior counsel and a counsel. They were open to phone or Skype interviews which was awesome because I couldn't travel. The interviewers were direct about questions and expectations. For the second interview, I met a department head, an HR manager, and a senior counsel. They initially asked me to come in person, but I explained that it wasn't feasible due to cost and time, so they set up a phone interview. The interviewers were friendly, but again, very straightforward with questions and what they expected.
- What would you do if you had multiple tasks due for different attorneys simultaneously and couldn't complete them all?
- Tell me about your most significant accomplishment.
- Describe a memorable or life-changing experience you've had.
Research Associate
I came into the office and met with 2 members of the Justice Program team. They immediately asked me, "Why do you want to work here?" and "Talk about your experience with criminal justice." All of the questions were very direct and when they explained the duties of the position, they made it clear that they didn't need anyone who would excel and go above and beyond, they just needed someone who was passionate about criminal justice, could handle administrative tasks, and had done research in the past.
- What makes you interested in criminal justice?
