I found the Senior Software Engineer role at Braze on Indeed and a recruiter reached out about setting up an initial call. The scheduling was super easy using their system. We chatted for about 20-30 mins, and the recruiter was really nice and explained everything, mentioning the technical screen was key. The technical screen went well, and setting up the virtual on-site interviews was also smooth. Even though I wasn't as prepared as I should have been, and one of the sessions showed some major weak spots, the interviewers were still great – friendly, adaptable, and encouraging. It was a good overall experience, and I liked talking to actual developers instead of just doing online tests.

Behavioral Technical

The interview process started with a 30-minute phone call with HR where I was asked some STAR-style behavioral questions and they gave me a long marketing pitch. Then, I had a 1-hour technical round with a senior software developer who asked the questions while a less experienced developer observed, seemingly for training. They jumped straight into the technical questions. I didn't make it to the next stage, but Braze appears to heavily prioritize technical skill above all else. My interviewer lacked interpersonal skills and seemed to be making poor judgments about me. I know someone hired here who is exceptionally smart and even she says Braze filters strongly for excellence, describing colleagues as emotionally robotic but highly intelligent. This makes sense given the high salaries offered for developing what seems like a culturally lacking product. The interview experience was negative, and I believe training staff on making candidates comfortable would be part of their definition of excellence.

Coding Technical Behavioral

Had a call with HR, they mentioned the interview would be collaborative and focus on problem-solving. Then, there was a coding session with a developer who was typing really fast the whole time. I felt a bit slow and only managed to complete two problems. After the coding part, I asked about their team's engineering process, and the interviewer explained they have a pretty basic process, even lacking CI/CD. HR sent a rejection, saying I didn't get to the third problem. I noticed the job posting was removed, so I guess they already filled the role. It was a bit of a weird experience overall, especially considering the lower advertised total compensation compared to other companies and the described lack of modern engineering practices, which probably means a lot of inefficiencies and stress on the job. The interview itself felt non-collaborative and seemed to focus solely on coding speed rather than the problem-solving approach.

  • Could you describe the team's current engineering process?
  • Can you elaborate on the company's approach to CI/CD?

What is the maximum nesting level of parentheses in a balanced parentheses string?

Read reports

Write a function that takes a multi-dimensional array of numbers (1-9) and returns a new array where any horizontal or vertical sequences of at least 3 consecutive numbers are replaced by 0s.

Read reports

For a balanced parentheses string, what's the maximum number of parentheses at the same depth level? For example, with "( () () () ) ()", the answer should be 3 because there are 3 closed parentheses at depth 1.
