First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Boston College.
Administrative Assistant
I applied for the Administrative Assistant role with my resume and a cover letter. I then had an in-person interview with the Associate Dean of Finance and Administration, the Administration Associate Director, and the Assistant Director of Interdisciplinary Programs. This was under 30 minutes and they asked standard questions about my resume and managing priorities. After that, I had a virtual interview with several Interdisciplinary Program Directors. They asked questions specific to their interests, with a strong focus on budget management. I also had a standard call with someone from HR somewhere in between.
- Could you review your resume with us?
- How do you manage competing priorities?
- What are your ideas for helping us stay within budget?
Marketing and Digital Engagement Director
Had an initial phone call with HR where they told me I wouldn't get close to the top of the salary range even though I was qualified. Then I went through the process and talked with the hiring manager and someone else from the Career Center. The final step was a 3-hour visit to the Career Center. This included a presentation on a topic they assigned, and then three more interviews with different groups of people. It was very intimidating. The staff seemed nice, but the leadership team was serious and didn't seem fun. They took two weeks to decide and gave the job to a recent BC grad.
- What is your understanding of DEI?
- Can you share a time you had a difficult situation with a coworker?
- What are your reasons for wanting to work at BC?
Program Manager
The interview process started with the usual steps like HR screening, followed by calls with managers and other team members. Everything was professional, with good questions asked and answered. However, the process after the interviews became unclear. I had to provide references and complete an on-site background check, which was a new and inconvenient requirement for me, though it was fast once I got there. I followed up with the recruiter for updates and was scheduled for a call. Surprisingly, this call included repetitive screening questions I'd already answered, like 'What attracted you to this position' and 'Why BC?', and they had no updates. I was confused about revisiting old questions and why a call was necessary if they were still deciding. A few days later, another recruiter contacted me to say the position was offered to someone else. They then wanted to consider me for a different role in another department, which was closer to my previous experience, despite me mentioning my interest in a career transition. This new role wasn't even officially open yet; they just thought the current person might leave in the next few months and wanted to know if I was interested. I was surprised they proposed a role with so few details about onboarding. While everyone I met was kind and professional, the internal systems seemed a bit confusing.
- What motivated your interest in this specific company, role, or department?
- What specifically drew you to this role?
- Why were you interested in this particular school or department?
Graduate Assistant
Applied, and then heard back about a month later about interviewing! Met with the interviewer over Zoom. It was scheduled for 30 minutes but only took 15. A lot of it was basic questions and asking about experience. Was told they're still accepting applications and interviewing, and that I'd hear back in a couple weeks. The next day I was reached out to interview again! Again done over Zoom, and was a lot more like a conversation. It was really easy, and again a lot of the questions were just about experience or behavioral. Was told again that they're still interviewing and that I'll hear back in a couple weeks. Got the offer the next day.
- Can you tell me about yourself?
- What kind of research experience do you have?
- Do you have graphic design experience?
