First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Bon-Ton Stores.
Sales Associate
The interview is pretty easy, HR calls you in and ask you a bunch of standard questions and then if they like you, you come in for a second interview with the shoe supervisor. For shoes specifically there is a lot of stress put on the "draw" pay situation (they want to make sure you understand it); this scares some people off because it's explained like it's terrifying. If you got an interview you passed the math test on the application, congrats!
- What prior retail experience do you have?
- How many years have you spent working in retail?
- Have you ever worked in a big stock room before? Ours can be overwhelming.

I had to apply online first, but the website was difficult to navigate. I later attended a job fair for a new store opening in Fort Wayne, IN, and was given an interview appointment. When I arrived for the interview, they couldn't find my online application. The department manager, who had over 3 years of fine jewelry experience plus several more years of related experience, seemed unsure of what questions to ask. I mentioned I wanted full-time, and she said she needed 'regional approval' to see if a position was available. The interview itself was brief, lasting about 10-15 minutes. I suspect I wasn't hired due to my age (over 50), as I know two people hired had less experience, and one even interviewed in shorts.
- Can you share an instance where a customer was dissatisfied and explain how you managed the situation?
Sales Associate
Applied online and heard back within a week. It was a formal interview with pre-written questions, some of which felt repetitive. It was pretty relaxed overall. They mentioned interviewing others and that I'd hear back by week's end. I got an offer.
- Can you describe a time you assisted a customer, detailing your actions and the results?
