Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at BMO Capital Markets.
Software Engineer
The interview was mostly questions about my resume, and they went pretty deep. Then they asked an easy Leetcode question. They also threw in some simple behavioral questions.
- Can you tell me more about your resume?
- Could you solve this Leetcode problem?
- Tell me about a time when...
Technical Lead
After an initial phone screen, I had a MS Teams meeting. It felt like they already had a candidate and this interview was just a formality. The interviewer even took a call during our meeting, put me on hold, and when he came back, he seemed completely disinterested, like something else was on his mind. Really unprofessional.
- Can you explain the differences between Sets like HashSet and TreeSet, specifically regarding their time complexities, such as O(1) versus O(logn)?
- Describe how you would have built the project you've been working on recently, but using only the technologies that were available back in the 90s.
- Regarding concurrent access to collections, what is a ConcurrentModificationException, and is it possible to encounter it even in a single-threaded application?
Senior Software Engineer
I had one technical interview round with 3 hiring managers. They grilled me on a bunch of stuff: general C++ and Java knowledge, data structures, sorting algorithms, how to design big applications in C++, Java EE7, and building web apps using AngularJS and Bootstrap. This bank is really pushing to get on par with the top three banks tech-wise and wants to pull in local IT talent. They're looking for experienced folks but are offering pay that's lower than the industry average.
- Could you write pseudocode to describe how a binary search tree's bidirectional iterator behaves?
