Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Bloomingdale's.
Buyer
So first I had this really quick phone call, like a 10-minute chat about me and the internship details. Then I did a Hirevue video interview where we went over my resume and talked about behavioral stuff. The last step was an interview with the SVP of diversity before I got the final word. The whole thing took about two months.
- Tell me about yourself and the internship.
- Can you share your experiences working in groups and teams?
Buyer
I had two interviews back to back. First, I spoke with HR, who asked standard questions about teamwork. Then, I interviewed with a buyer who asked more operational questions.
- What brand would you invest in with $1 million?
- Can you discuss a recent retail industry article you read?
Assistant Buyer
Bloomingdale's really likes to promote from within, which is why I took this job hoping to move up. I noticed a lot of the managers and assistant managers I met had less education and experience than me. I asked them how they got their jobs because I wanted to advance. Many said they got the job partly or entirely because they knew someone, like an uncle. So, maybe it's nepotism? You can be the judge. I couldn't get an interview for the job I wanted, so I networked like crazy. Turns out I also had a family friend who knew someone at the company, and they got me an interview. It made me wonder if I only got the interview because I found someone with an 'in.' The interview process is way too long. HR also doesn't tell you if you're moving on, so I had to call myself, which I found really unprofessional and inconsiderate, especially since I had other offers and had been interviewing for a month as an internal candidate. My advice is to get to know people who can help your career. Don't expect to be promoted based on your skills, education, or experience. It's all about who you know and how much they like you, in my opinion.
- What makes you want to be an assistant buyer?
